Heidschnuckenweg: a walking route with more than just heather and sheep
Heidschnucken and the Lüneburger Heide are inextricably linked. The typical heather sheep with their curved horns ensure that the heathlands are not overgrown by bushes and are also a popular motif for every photographer. There is a good chance that you will encounter a shepherd with his flock during a walk. Walking on the 223 km long Heidschnuckenweg hiking trail is an experience for all the senses: the rolling purple hills in late summer, the spiced air of black currants, the heavy scent of the juniper bushes, the soft ground, and that incredible tranquility everywhere.
The Heidschnuckenweg runs from Hamburg-Fischbeck to Celle and connects dozens of small and large heath areas of the Lüneburger Heide. One is more beautiful than the other. Sometimes they are almost mountains with steep, heather-covered slopes, sometimes it is a fairytale valley with capricious juniper bushes and a splashing stream. The heath plains are interspersed with streams and a mosaic of fields, meadows and bushes. The walking route runs through authentic heath villages with characteristic half-timbered houses, of course with wood, but sometimes also made of boulders. Time seems to stand still here.
