Description

It probably speaks for itself where this route starts, if you look at the name of the route: in Dortmund. From here you cycle to the tip of Germany on the Wadden Sea near Norden. The gems along the route consist of historical and cultural attractions and cities that are bustling with life.

Cycling along the canal
From Dortmund you cycle for a long time along the side of the Dortmund-Ems-Kanal. You mainly cycle on an old towpath that is wonderfully quiet in the middle of nature. This route was specially developed in 1999 to celebrate the centenary of the canal. On the way to Münster you cycle through an open landscape with small-scale forest areas here and there and then you cycle into the Emsland. Along the way, be sure to take a look at the Dörenther Klippen, a long band of sandstone rock formations. In some places the rocks are up to 20 meters high. From Münster you continue to Lingen and Emden.

Castle Evenburg
In the East Frisian town of Leer you will find the Evenburg Castle. Stroll through the castle garden, which is open to everyone, and admire the old moated castle that was built here in the 17th century. You then cycle on to the seaside resort of Norddeich on the North Sea. Here you can walk on the mudflats or enjoy the sea from the beach.

Castle garden Lütetsburg
Just before you cycle into Norden you will pass the Lütetsburg Castle Garden. This is the largest English-style landscape park in all of northern Germany. You will find more than 150 different types of trees and shrubs here. As a nature lover you can indulge yourself here, but you will also find historic buildings and beautiful garden ornaments. There is plenty to see in this castle garden.
