A day of walking across the Veluwe

Enjoying unparalleled natural beauty for a day: that is still possible in the Veluwe. This walk takes you along sloping paths through woods and heathland, but also past two war memorials. Pack some supplies for the road!

Veluwe peat
You walk through a backdrop of varied forests, whimsical streams and old heaths. While walking you always have a chance to spot a deer or fox. From the Gortelse Berg you look out over the quiet heath: you imagine yourself a few hundred years back in time. At the beginning and end of your walk you walk through two peat bogs. You will find grasslands full of wild flowers and old hedgerows here. Beautiful!

Hidden village
In the middle of the woods you pass L59, one of the listening posts from the Liberation Route. Here you will hear the dramatic story of the Hidden Village: a secret village in hiding that was founded in the spring of 1943 in the woods. Three huts have been reconstructed, some remnants of the original huts can still be found. Further on is the Monument to the Shot of Jews.
