Description
On to Mechelen
The starting point of this cycle route is just outside Lier at Brasserie't Oud Lier. From here you cycle through the vast landscape to the village of Onze-Lieve-Vrouw-Waver. This village is mainly known for the Ursuline Monastery that was built here in 1841. You can see the turrets of the school and monastery complex towering above the village from far away. For a long time this was a girls' school, but now it is a mixed school. Then you cycle further to Mechelen. Make a stop to stroll through the old streets of Mechelen or sit down on a terrace to enjoy a Belgian beer or a tasty snack.
Via Duffel to Lier
From Mechelen you set course for Duffel. You cycle past the Domain Roosendael, a country estate with a landscape park. You will also pass Duffel Fort. In 1914, this fort was used as defense against the barrage of German troops.
Stroll through ancient streets
Eventually you arrive back in Lier. The city is located on the Nete River with beautiful sights. Take a look at this charming town and enjoy the peace and quiet in the attractive beguinage or find a terrace or a restaurant. On the Grote Markt you can admire the Gothic belfry, which is on the UNESCO World Heritage List, and you can also take a look at the Zimmer Museum. At the end of the route you will arrive back at Brasserie't Oud Lier. Here you can enjoy a well-deserved cup of coffee, a tasty meal or a beer.
