Description
On to Mechelen
The starting point of this cycle route is just outside Lier at Brasserie't Oud Lier. From here you cycle through the vast landscape to the village of Onze-Lieve-Vrouw-Waver. This village is mainly known for the Ursuline Convent that was built here in 1841. You can see the turrets of the school and monastery complex towering above the village from far away. For a long time this was a girls' school, but nowadays it is a mixed school. You then cycle on to Mechelen. Make a stopover to stroll through the old streets of Mechelen or settle down on a terrace to enjoy a Belgian beer or a tasty snack.
Via Duffel to Lier
From Mechelen you set course for Duffel. You will cycle along the Roosendael Domain, a country estate with a landscape park. You will also pass the fortress of Duffel. In 1914 this fort was used as a defense against the barrage of the German troops.
Stroll through ancient streets
You will eventually end up in Lier again. The city is located on the river Nete with beautiful sights. Take a look at this charming town and enjoy the tranquility of the attractive beguinage or find a terrace or a restaurant. On the Grote Markt you can admire the Gothic belfry that is on the UNESCO World Heritage List and you can also take a look at the Zimmermuseum. At the end of the route you will return to Brasserie't Oud Lier. Here you can settle down for a well-deserved cup of coffee, a tasty meal or a beer.
