Around Lage Vuursche is a varied, wooded landscape. The town itself enjoys a protected village view. An ideal environment to discover on foot.
Maartensdijk Forest
In the Maartensdijkse Bos you walk between the Douglas firs and old beech trees planted for wood production. A wonderful environment to relax or to chat with a friend or family member. Soon you will pass Drakensteyn Estate. Originally the castle dates from the fourteenth century, the current building dates from 1640. You cannot visit the building. Unless you belong to the intimates of Princess Beatrix, the current resident.
Beautiful Stulpkerk
The village of Lage Vuursche enjoys a protected village view because of the beautiful eighteenth and nineteenth century houses. The beautiful Stulpkerk originally dates from 1659. In Boswachterij Lage Vuursche you walk through a mix of deciduous and coniferous trees. You also walk over De Stulp, a heathland where it is wonderfully quiet.
Queen's bench
With Drakensteyn a stone's throw away, it is almost inevitable that the Stulpkerk bears royal memories. Such as the so-called Koninginnebank, a bank that was used by the Dutch royal family until Beatrix moved to The Hague in 1981. The back seat was for the queen, the front for the court staff. The pew had its own access to the outside, so that the royal party did not have to go through the whole church to reach it. In 1988 the pulpit and queen's pew were moved. The bible from the royal pew has been on the lectern in the church ever since. Although the queen's couch dates from 1938, queens Emma and Wilhelmina once also had their own seating area here.
