Cycling along and through the water in the Wijers

The Abbey of Herkenrode
Herkenrode Abbey is the starting point of this route. A monastery already stood on the site of this former Cistercian nun monastery at the beginning of the 12th century, but nothing remains of that building. Now, you'll only find buildings dating from the sixteenth to the eighteenth century, but even those are worth a visit. From here, you'll head to Zonhoven and then continue to Diepenbeek. Along the way, you'll cycle through the Wijers region.

Cycling through the Water
After about 17 kilometers of cycling, you'll reach the attraction "Cycling through Water." This is a cycle path that takes you right through a pond. Don't worry, you won't get wet cycling here. This unique path was designed to harmonize with the surrounding greenery. The Wijers is a habitat for amphibians and waterfowl, among other things. Then, you'll cycle back to Herkenrode Abbey via Hasselt, cycling along the Albert Canal for a while.

Strolling through Hasselt
If you're already cycling through Hasselt, you might as well stop here and enjoy the Capital of Taste. Stroll through the streets of Hasselt's city center and choose one of the many charming restaurants for a well-deserved bite to eat or a cup of coffee. Then you can hit the road full of energy.
