Description
You will find quiet and green nature reserves between Hasselt, Zonhoven and Genk. This route takes you through the Wijers pond area, among other things, where you can enjoy the many ponds, the green nature and a special attraction.
Herkenrode Abbey
Herkenrode Abbey is the starting point of this route. There was already a monastery on the site of this former monastery for Cistercian nuns at the beginning of the 12th century, but nothing remains of that building. Now you will only find buildings from the sixteenth to the eighteenth century, but those buildings are also worth a visit. From here you set course for Zonhoven and then cycle on to Diepenbeek. Along the way you cycle through the Wijers area.
Cycling through the Water
After cycling for about 17 kilometers you will arrive at the attraction 'Cycling through the Water'. This is a cycle path that takes you straight through a pond. Don't worry, you won't get wet cycling here. This special path has been constructed in harmony with the green nature surrounding it. De Wijers is, among other things, the habitat of amphibians and water birds. Then you cycle back via Hasselt to the Herkenrode Abbey. You cycle a bit along the Albert Canal.
Strolling through Hasselt
If you're already cycling through Hasselt, you might as well stop here to enjoy the Capital of Taste. Stroll through the streets of the center of Hasselt and choose one of the many cozy restaurants for a well-deserved bite to eat or a cup of coffee. Then you can hit the road again full of energy.
