Cycling along the Waal from Tiel

The Hanseatic city of Tiel is beautifully situated on the edge of the Waal. This route takes you along the course of the Waal from one cozy town to another on the floodplains of the river. Along the way you cross the river twice with a ferry.

The starting point of this route is Cafe Olie B, where you can drink a nice cup of coffee on the nice and quiet terrace. Then you cycle further to Tiel. A long canal runs straight through this city that connects the Waal with the Linge. This canal used to be part of the New Dutch Waterline. By opening the lock in Tiel, more water was drained to De Linge. About 20 kilometers downstream the land then flooded to make it difficult for the enemy to advance. By ferry
The nice thing about this route is that you cross the river twice on a ferry. From Tiel you can take the ferry to Wamel. With the water on your left and the small villages of Beneden-Leeuwen and Boven-Leeuwen, you cycle towards Druten, where you cross the river again with the ferry.

Wijenburg Castle
In Echteld you cycle past Wijenburg Castle. It is not known when this castle was built, but the oldest mentions of this castle date back to 1178. In 1957, restoration of the castle started and it was completed in 1977.
