If you look at the original Delta Plan, you will not immediately find the Oesterdam among them. Yet this dam is unmistakably part of the Delta Works. After the devastating flood disaster of 1953, there was a strong focus on protecting the Netherlands, and Zeeland in particular, against flooding. In order to maintain the dynamics of ebb and flow in the Oosterschelde, a water barrier was chosen that partially allows the tide.
The construction of the Oyster Dam ensured that a reduced ebb and flow effect was maintained, which is beneficial for shellfish farming. In the nearby village of Yerseke, many shellfish are farmed. On the Oyster Boulevard in Yerseke, you can taste the most delicious oysters, fresh from the oyster pits.
Around Oesterdam you will find the vast oyster fields. In certain places visitors are allowed to look for oysters themselves. In order to protect nature, it is allowed to take a maximum of 5 kg of oysters for personal use. Pay attention to the tides; before you know it, you will be standing with wet feet!
Cycling along the waterfront you see the landscape move with the water level, which produces beautiful images.
