Your route starts at Tuincentrum Schmitz. This route takes you from Central Limburg to Germany. A route with lots of natural beauty and beautiful German villages. You drive through the Roerdalen region, the area around the Roer where the landscape undulates gently. You will find stream valleys and quiet forests here. There is still a friendly atmosphere in the villages. The history of the Duchy of Gelre began at Wassenberg Castle in the eleventh century. Gerard van Antoing was expelled from Flanders at that time, after which he was given the castle by Emperor Henry II of the Holy Roman Empire. Gerard would become the founder of the Duchy of Gelre. However, the core of power soon moved from Wassenberg to Geldern, from which Gelre also takes its name.
