Castle
Kasteel Wassenberg
The history of the Duchy of Guelders began in the eleventh century at Wassenberg Castle. Gerard van Antoing was expelled from Flanders at that time, after which he was given the castle by Emperor Henry II of the Holy Roman Empire. Gerard would become the ancestor of the duchy of Gelre. However, the core of the power soon moved from Wassenberg to Geldern, from which Gelre also derives its name.
