Your route starts at Het Slimme Schaap. Via the small hamlets of Terhagen and Broekhoven you walk to the Elsloerbos. In this humid landscape you will see many springs, streams and waterfalls. Thanks to the unique soil conditions, some special plants grow here, such as giant horsetail. In the spring, the rare, onion-smelling wild garlic blooms here. From the park you can see Elsloo Castle. Its predecessor stood slightly more to the west. Its foundations become visible when the Maas has an extremely low water level. According to tradition, this lost castle was part of a very large early medieval complex of military buildings. In order to escape the greedy Maas water, the then lord of the castle had a new castle built at the current location at the end of the fifteenth century.
