Castle Route Maastricht and Hoensbroek

This route takes you past the country estates of Vaeshartelt and Bethlehem, special spots for a coffee break. The moated medieval Borgharen Castle is picture-perfect. The Borgharen Horse Grave is the only one of its kind. No fewer than 67 horse skeletons, dozens of horseshoes, and lead musket balls have been found here. Scan the code at the spearhead for the full story! After a break at Eetcafe Spech in Spaubeek, you cycle east through the beautiful Geleenbeek Valley. The highlight of the route (and the wider region) is Hoensbroek Castle. A motte stood on this site as early as around 1225. Due to its strategic location on the trade routes to Maastricht, Aachen, and Cologne, this original castle developed into the largest fortress between the Meuse and the Rhine. Wijnandsrade is also beautiful, with the castle of the same name.
