Paardengraf Borgharen

During the construction of the River Park Maasvallei in 2010, a special horse grave was discovered in Borgharen. Extensive archaeological research has shown that the horses were almost certainly killed in a battle near Maastricht in 1794. When this grave was discovered, it was temporarily big news. It was the first time that a horse grave of this size had been excavated in Europe. At the site of the grave, a large work of art can now be found, consisting of 65 large ground blocks and a group of polished black stones. These blocks refer to the number of horse skeletons buried here. The work of art is about 50 meters long and two meters wide, just like the horse grave itself. You will also find a board with more information about the historical background of this grave. The gravel blocks can nowadays be used as a resting point by holiday-makers who pass this place during their bike ride or during a walk.
