Cycling through the top of North Holland

Get a breath of fresh air along the IJsselmeer coast
Medemblik is the starting point of this route. This is the oldest city in West Friesland and you can see that in all the beautiful sights that you can find here. For example, take a look at the harbor of Medemblik and see a historic ship from the brown fleet. From here you cycle along the IJsselmeer coast all the way to the top of North Holland at Den Oever. This village is located at the beginning of the Afsluitdijk. You then continue to Westerland through the top of North Holland. On the way you will pass the corn mill De Onderneming. This mill was built in 1860 and today it still grinds flour for some bakers.

Then you set course again to Medemblik through the interior. In the middle of the historic center of this city you will find Eetcafé de Babbelaar. A village near the Afsluitdijk
From Den Oever, the Afsluitdijk runs all the way to Friesland. This flood defense closes off the IJsselmeer from the Wadden Sea. Before the construction of this structure, Den Oever was completely on the open sea. Today only the north side of the village faces the sea. The village is best known for shrimp fishing. On the harbor dike of this village you will find a monument to the fishermen of Wieringen who died during their work as shrimp fishermen.
