Cycling through the top of North Holland

Blow out along the IJsselmeer coast
Medemblik is the starting point of this route. This is the oldest city in West Friesland and you can see that in all the beautiful sights you can find here. For example, take a look at the harbour of Medemblik and see a historic ship from the brown fleet. From here you cycle along the IJsselmeer coast all the way to the top of North Holland at Den Oever. This village is located at the beginning of the Afsluitdijk. Then you cycle on to Westerland through the top of North Holland. On the way you will pass the corn mill De Onderneming. This mill was built in 1860 and today flour is still ground in it for several bakers.

Then you set course for Medemblik again through the interior. In the middle of the historical centre of this city you will find Eetcafé de Babbelaar. A village near the Afsluitdijk
From Den Oever, the Afsluitdijk runs all the way to Friesland. This water barrier separates the IJsselmeer from the Wadden Sea. Before the construction of this structure, Den Oever was completely on the open sea. Nowadays, only the northern side of the village is on the sea. The village is mainly known for its shrimp fishing. On the harbor dike of this village, you will find a monument for the fishermen of Wieringen who lost their lives during their work as shrimp fishermen.
