Description
The Waai & Braai walking route passes Landgoed Stameren (7 km), Landgoed Hoog Moersbergen (11 km) and De Kaapse Bossen (17 km). Waai & Braai has nothing to do with a South African barbecue; Huis Stameren was named after the weather conditions on the Heuvelrug at the time Huis Stameren was built. In 1904 the Heuvelrug was still completely bare and on the sand plain it could blow strongly, and in the summer'braai\\\': get hot.
Stammering
Stameren is located on the 48 meter high Maarnse Berg and is a varied forest with small heaths. A really nice element is the presence of overgrown rhododendrons. Huis Stameren has a park-like garden and a pond. The heath field in the northwest corner of Stameren is a protected national monument: here are urnfields with burial mounds from the Iron Age.
High Moersbergen
This is a young, natural forest with plenty of oaks and birches. This area once belonged to Kasteel Moersbergen. The old barons and lords of Moersbergen were active tree planters and the Weymouth Pines and European Larches are a legacy of this. There are also oak and beech, but also ash, lime and elm. Foxes, hares, squirrels and bats are common.
Cape Forests
This name does come from South Africa. Hendrik Swellengrebel bought the area in 1750 after he returned from Cape Town. He thought the woods resembled what he had seen behind Table Mountain. The flora is diverse with beech, open plains, oak and coniferous trees. In autumn there are many mushrooms. There are pine martens, different types of woodpeckers and tawny owls. The walk also leads to De Kaap lookout tower, a 67-meter high tower that offers a view of the entire area after a steep climb.
