Your route starts at Restaurant De Voortwisch. The Winterswijk National Landscape covers approximately 22,000 hectares and consists mainly of beautiful semi-open areas with alternating small plots and large ash trees. Here and there you will see some bushes, avenues or hedgerows and you will even come across some raised bogs. The large open quarry at Ratum is particularly special, because geological deposits from the Tertiary have been found here that are relatively close to the surface. You will also pass through the former Gossink scholten estate. The scholte was the Saxon version of the sheriff: he was responsible for local justice and law enforcement. He also had to take care of the maintenance of the landscape. The characteristic bocage landscape around Winterswijk is partly due to these scholts.
