Stolp farm types

In the Anna Paulowna, Barsingerhorn, Poolland, Keins and Oudesluis area, there are four main farmhouse types and various intermediate forms. The type and size of the farms depends on the type of farm, the preference of the builder and the plot of land that belonged to the farm. All farmhouses have the same square construction at the heart with uprights on which the roof beams rest. The pyramidal roof rests on this framework, which can be covered with thatch or tiles or a combination of both. In the case of kapbergen and incomplete farmhouses, the facade can also be made of wood, with the other farm types the facades are usually made of stone.

North Holland Normal bell jar

Originated in the 17th century with the arrival of the reclaimed land. Also built in large numbers in the later, rich 19th century. Occurs throughout North Holland. Characteristic is the location of threshing (threshing doors at the rear) and cattle shed parallel to each other (with access in the front and rear). The'short line\\\' for the young cattle at the rear and the living area at the front. This type also has the manor farm variant in the polders with richly ornamented, symmetrically arranged top facades. Extensions also occur when the livestock shed is expanded (\\'tail\\').

Longhouse farmhouse

Originated from the Frisian longhouse and the hayhouse farm. Attached longhouse to dome-shaped inner shed with drone and continuous cattle shed in the longhouse. Two types can be distinguished: one with the continuous stable and one with the long house as a living area in front of the bell jar section and the stable behind the (hay) mountain. This type was also built after successive bell jar types had emerged. Occurs in Waterland, Zaanstreek, Kennemerland and on Texel.

West Frisian Stolp Farm

Originated in the second half of the 16th century in Wes]riesland and is common there. Characteristic is the location of the drone (drone doors at the front-road side) and the cattle shed (at the rear). The living area on the side wall. At the front is an indoor, sometimes slightly extended, front house with a show room and an upstairs room with a cellar. In that facade there is sometimes a richly decorated'mourning and wedding door\\\', only to be opened at marriages and funerals. The mansion type from the 19th century lacks an extension and the facade is symmetrically arranged, sometimes with two doors. In the rich period of the late 19th century, many bell jars were renovated with stone facades, a roof mirror and a round chimney.

Incomplete farmhouse

In an Incomplete farmhouse, often 1 side is'cut off\\\' or a front house has been placed on this side, similar to the longhouse bell jar. Wooden incomplete farmhouses without a front house are not common in this area, but you often see them in, for example the Zaan region. Stone incomplete farmhouses with an attached front house do occur in this area. The type was very popular in the 1920s.

Kapbergen and hay augers

In the yards of farmhouses you will often find outbuildings in the form of kapbergen or hay augers. Nowadays often repurposed as a home or even as a new building between the old ribbon development. Kapbergen often have the characteristic gerabaae facades, the black wooden parts with which the walls are covered.

Hay augers were originally simple roofs for the storage of hay, but nowadays they are also used as full-fledged outbuildings in the yard. Sometimes with an edge of hay bales where only after looking closely can you see that these are for decoration.
