This cycling route takes you along the Lopikerwaard. In the pleasant, quiet polder landscape you cycle through historic towns and along the Lek and the Hollandse IJssel.
Historic Montfoort
In Schoonhoven you see the Veerpoort, the only one of the original five city gates that remains. In Montfoort you will see another historic gate: the gatehouse of Montfoort Castle, which was demolished in the seventeenth century. You will also pass the St. John's Church from 1500 and the Commandery of St. John, a former monastery building from 1544. Oudewater is the oldest town in the Green Heart. In the Waag from 1482 there is an exhibition about the persecution of witches.
Nature Museum
There are still many old polder mills in the Lopikerwaard. For example, you see De Bachtenaar from 1714. The Bonrepas (French for good meal) is even older: this beautiful mill dates from 1600. If you want to know more about the water management in the Lopikerwaard (where most houses are located lower than the rivers!) can visit the Polder Museum Gemaal De Hooge Boezem in Haastrecht. De Wielewaal Nature Museum is also interesting, with numerous taxidermied animals.
Below you will find various suggestions for breaks that you can visit during your route. These are divided into different categories, making it easy for you to choose.
