By bike to Sneek

Friesland could also have been called Cycling Country. With its water-rich polder landscape, rich cultural history and centuries-old towns, cycling is wonderful here. This route takes you through Sneek and surroundings.

Old mansions
The picturesque Sneek is not without reason a protected cityscape. One of the oldest sights is the Martinikerk, which was built on a mound in the eleventh century with tuff stone. The current building dates from 1498. In Broek and Goingagijp you can still admire authentic Frisian bell towers at the churches. Terhorne is located on the corner of a land reclamation from the twelfth century. According to the inhabitants of this village, the children's book series De Kameleon is set here.

Frisian lakes
Besides beautiful old villages and towns, you will of course also find a lot of water in Friesland. You cycle along the Langweerderwielen and the Sneekermeer. On the banks you will see waving reed collars, on the water you can spot many birds, pleasure boats or skûtsjes. A nice moment to take a break and enjoy the peace and quiet.

Joure coffee city
Do you have some time left? The old centre of Joure is also nice to cycle through. Joure is known as the town where Egbert Douwes started a shop in colonial goods such as coffee in 1753. In 1780, father Douwes transferred the company to his son: Douwe Egberts. The rest, as they say, is history, because DE is now the largest coffee company in the world. Speaking of history: in Joure you also pass the Groene Molen, a polder mill from 1800.
