Gelders Arcadia East

The Veluwezoom is known for 'Gelders Arcadia', the landscape of extensive estates, country estates and castles. For example, you will find Middachten Estate and Park and Rosendael Castle here. The hilly landscape has always been attractive to wealthy families, who built their country houses there and created the most beautiful gardens and parks. With the arrival of train connections in the 19th century, more and more wealthy Westerners came to the Gelders Arcadia estate zone to enjoy this unique landscape and to build their 'country estates' there. And we can still enjoy the many outdoors in this area!
This route leads you through the eastern part of the Veluwezoom, where you cycle through the municipality of Rheden, the municipality of Rozendaal and a short distance through the municipality of Arnhem. The varied landscapes give you a good idea of why this part of the Netherlands is so attractive for people to settle here.
You cycle along the IJssel and associated floodplains, but you also encounter height differences and beautiful heathlands in the Veluwezoom National Park. The main castles and estates that you pass during this cycle route are the privately inhabited Biljoen Castle in Velp, Middachten Estate in De Steeg en Park and Rosendael Castle in Rozendaal.
Both Landgoed Middachten and Rosendael Park and Castle have beautiful gardens where you can take a lovely walk during the summer months. Go in search of the famous'imposters\\\' in Park Rosendael, but be careful not to get wet! The special interior of both castles can also be admired on specific days and give a good idea of how life used to be.
