Walking around the Gouwzee

This long route takes you for a walk around the Gouwzee. You will visit Marken, Volendam and Monnickendam. What a rich cultural history!

The route starts on the edge of Monnickendam. You walk into the old center, where you stumble over the historic buildings, so to speak. What a wonderful atmosphere! Walking along the Hoogedijk you have beautiful views of the Gouwzee. You will see Volendam appear on the horizon. Here you pass De Kathammer Molen, a polder mill from 1650. In the pleasant harbor of Volendam you will find beautiful buildings, such as the Stolp Church from 1658.

You can sail to Marken by boat, an experience in itself. You will find many authentic houses here.  You walk down Marken via the Waterlandse Zeedijk, which originally dates from the Middle Ages. The last part of the route takes you through the Waterland, a National Landscape of vast peat meadows, ditches and wide views with high Dutch skies. It looks like a painting!
