Tour of Canadameer, Aekingerzand lookout tower and Grenspoel

Your route starts at Camping Wilhelminahoeve. At Restaurant Aekingerzand, right on the beautiful Aeckingermeer, or Canadameer, you can enjoy a snack and drink. A beautiful spot in nature, where you can also swim. Lake Canada was dug in the 1960s as a sand extraction location. The water quality is particularly good because it is fed by groundwater. As a result, special plants occur. Because of the swimmers, little sediment reaches the banks and the shore herbs benefit from this. Drents-Friese Wold National Park is one of the largest nature reserves in the Netherlands. No wonder it is wonderfully quiet here! Here you can enjoy many kilometers of varied forests, heathlands, meadows and streams. You have beautiful views of the Aekingerzand from the lookout tower. Further on is the Grenspoel, a fen on the border of Drenthe and Friesland.
