This cycling tour today has a historical character. We explore the contours of the ingenious defense line 1629 that was once constructed by Prince Frederick Henrick and his Dutch army for the siege of 's-Hertogenbosch. Despite the 394 years (2023) that separate us, we can still recognize the theater of this important battle during the 80 Years War (1568-1648) against Spain. Along the route of this defense line, rediscovered in 2018, we see remains of forts, redoubts, dikes and fortifications.
Today's tour is based on the cycling guide Linie 1629's-Hertogenbosch , published by De Paadjesmakers . Our route is 99.9% in accordance with this guide, but deviates slightly where necessary depending on the location of our hotel, restaurants, specific sights or overlapping route sections that we have seen before. In preparation for our tour, it is an advantage to study the websites Linie 1629 cycle route and De Groene Vesting . These websites are full of historical background information.
The official'Line 1629\\\' starts in our cycling guide at Fort Isabella . The fort is only a few minutes away from the parking lot - van der Valk Hotel\\\'s Hertogenbosch
