Natuurgebied Maasuiterwaarden
Before 1900, the Maas between 's-Hertogenbosch and Grave was a river with many large bends. The landscape was very flat, which caused the river to fan out widely and create large bends. Large areas were flooded at high water levels. The light and fine silt in the Meuse water settled in the flooded areas, creating heavy river clay bottoms. The polders in this region therefore mainly consist of clay soil, the so-called basin soils.
