The Reestdal is an unspoilt and quiet area in Drenthe where you can cycle at your leisure. This route also introduces you to Drenthe's peat history.
The Reestdal
The Reest is a peat stream that forms part of the border between Overijssel and Drenthe. It is wonderful to cycle in the valley around this meandering stream. You drive through a landscape where meadows, old hedgerows, ash trees, heathland and forest alternate. The unspoilt character of this area makes the Reestdal a true paradise. The old thatched farmhouses fit perfectly into the decor. Every now and then you feel like you are in an open-air museum here.
Drenthe peat history
Straight roads at right angles to each other, villages with a characteristic ribbon development: you also drive through the Drenthe peat area. In the Dalerpeel you can still smell the characteristic fresh and sour smell of the peat. The Hollandsche Veld consists of countless strips of forest plots and cultivated land in which you can see the subdivision pattern of peat extraction. The Steenberger Oosterveld is a park-like landscape that consists of a mosaic of forests, heathlands and cultivated fields.
