The surrounding open polders, green parks and nature reserves make Spijkenisse a good base for a cycling or walking tour. From the urban area you can easily explore the surrounding nature reserves, each with its own character. Spijkenisse, sandwiched between the Oude Maas and the Spui, is the largest town on Voorne-Putten. The area was already inhabited about 10,000 years ago. The name Spijkenisse is mentioned for the first time in 1231. The city has grown rapidly in recent decades from an agricultural village to a city with modern residential areas and special architecture, which are worth admiring.
A few tips
Museum house'Back to the Sixties\\'
Go back in time and visit the'Back to the Sixties\\' museum house. The corner apartment of residential complex'Serreburgh\\\' has been renovated back to the year it was built: 1964. An exhibition is organized twice a year in one of the rooms, which highlights an aspect from the 1960s. Address: Eikenlaan 37a, Spijkenisse. Open Thurs to Sun 1pm-4.30pm.
Polder Biert
The Polder Biert consists of marshy grasslands and is one of the lowest parts of Putten (approx. 1.7 meters below NAP). The grasslands form an important breeding area for meadow birds, such as the black-tailed godwit and meadow pipit. The water in ditches and ditches is brackish as a result of the salty seepage water. Salt-loving plants such as spurrie, strawberry clover and red eyebright come for this. Orchids can be found on the higher parts.
Geervliet
The town of Geervliet was once the residence of the noble lords of Putten and obtained city rights in 1381. Geervliet was a prosperous city due to its favorable location on the busy trade route across the Bernisse water. The old core has a protected cityscape, with special buildings such as the Town Hall from 1630.
Architecture in Spijkenisse
Spijkenisse has been Plaquestad since 2009, an initiative of the Netherlands Architecture Institute. In the city, special buildings are provided with a plaque with information about the architect, client and the year of construction. One of these remarkable buildings is the Boekenberg library, whose design refers to a traditional Dutch farmhouse.
