A tour along the Waal

This route takes you along the Waal. Cycling on the dike you can enjoy views over the floodplains and the rippling water. You soon pass the Waardenburg, a corn mill from 1780. On the right is De Kil, an old river course that is lined with willow pilot whales. Just before Opijnen, to the left of the dike, you will see Huyze Uytterwaerde, a country house dating from 1849. In Varik, you pass a fifteenth-century church tower, after which you cross the river. You drive on the narrow strip of land between the Waal and the Maas. Where these rivers once had an open connection, you now drive over the St. Andries, a lock that originally dates from 1856. Further on you can take a look at Kasteel Rossum. The route ends at Farm Camping De Hoge Haren.
