Description

Immerse yourself in the world of Dik Trom in and around Etersheim. Cornelis Johannes Kieviet wrote the now famous stories about Dik Trom here in the 19th century. Take a walk on the Dik Trom path and discover whether you recognize places from the stories.

The origin of Dik Trom
A large part of this route takes you through the Etersheimerbraak polder. From here you walk to Etersheim along Poldermolen de Breek. The gem on this route is the school of Dik Trom. The writer of the books about Dik Trom was a teacher here between 1883 and 1902. He wrote his stories in the adjacent teacher's house because he was dissatisfied with the youth literature that existed at the time. Every day he wrote a chapter of the first book about Dik Trom in a school notebook. This became the best-read children's book in the Netherlands.

A historical school
The Dik Trom school has been restored to its original state with school desks from the past, wooden shoes under the coat rack and much more. Take a look here and learn more about children's books at the children's book museum located here. From Etersheim you walk back into the polder. You eventually end at Visitor Center De Breek where you can enjoy a snack and a drink.

Walking on the dike
The last part of this route takes you along the Dik Trom path. This path runs over the dike of the Etersheimerbraak polder. From here you have a beautiful view over the Markermeer and the Kleiput, the deepest point in North Holland. That's a pleasure once again!
