Description

About knights and castles
Bronkhorst is the smallest city in the Netherlands, how cool is that! It once originated as a small farming settlement around a castle. Against all expectations, the village hardly grows, only in status. In the 15th century, the influential Lords of Bronkhorst ensured that Bronkhorst acquired city rights. A city wall is built and a moat dug. The residents feel safe! Until a devastating city fire in 1633 reduced most of the buildings to ashes... Despite this disaster, Bronkhorst has managed to retain its medieval atmosphere.

Bronkhorst Castle
The origins of Bronkhorst Castle are a motte-and-bailey castle from the 10th century; a simple wooden fortress on an artificial hill. The castle grew into one of the most important in the county of Zutphen and even became the ancestral seat of the Lords of Bronckhorst; very influential knights in the Zutphen Quarter. During the Eighty Years' War, the castle was occupied and burned after a long Spanish siege. In the 18th century it slowly fell into further decline. At the beginning of the 20th century, the last remains of Bronkhorst Castle were demolished. Only the well on top of the hill still reminds us of the once so imposing castle.

Banner Lords
The lords of Bronkhorst were among the four 'banner lords' of the county who only pledged allegiance to the emperor and not to the count. Banner lords formed the most powerful nobility in the county of Zutphen. It is not known where the title comes from. Originally it meant nobles who were allowed to fly their own banner on the battlefield: a stiff square flag attached to a lance.
