Cycling through Vriezenveen and the Engbertsdijksvenen

This route introduces you to the area around Westerhaar and Vriezenveen. First you drive on car-free roads past vast meadows and fields. The roads are straight and almost perpendicular to each other: a living reminder of the peat history of this region. Further on you drive through the eastern part of Vriezenveen. In the elongated main street you will see many houses with a characteristic facade. There are several monumental farms that were built at the end of the nineteenth century. After a while you drive along the edge of the Engbertsdijksvenen. This nature reserve is a remnant of a much larger peat swamp that was once here. Get off for a moment to enjoy the beautiful view. The route ends at De Johanneshoeve.
