The Kleine Noordwaard

Waxing Moon
The Biesbosch is one of the few freshwater areas in the world where there is an ebb and flow. Visual artist Paul de Kort has incorporated this in a beautiful way in De Wassende Maan. This work of art consists of water channels and dikes and looks different every time due to the influence of the weather, the tide and the seasons. Climb the landscaped hill on the Bandijk to discover the work of art.

Bird mecca
From the dike you have beautiful views over the many waters and meadows. You will see many birds, such as the pintail, teal, wigeon, gadwall and shoveler. If you're lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of the osprey and white-tailed eagle that occasionally come to hunt here. So bring your binoculars. And your boots, because it's wet here.

Ancient osier and reed culture
When the Haringvliet locks came into operation in 1970, the tidal difference in the Biesbosch was no longer two meters, but forty centimeters. This gave new crops the opportunity to grow, so that they replaced the traditionally common reed buntings and moist fields with willow wood (the so-called willows). However, next to the Biesbosch Museum Island is De Pannekoek, a small area where you can still see the age-old reed and osier culture. The marked two-kilometre walk takes you past a willow garden, among other things. You can also learn everything about the Biesbosch in the museum itself.
