Three countries in one route

Cycling through South Limburg is an experience in itself. The views are always beautiful, whether you are riding through one of the lovely stream valleys or looking around from a hilltop. It feels like an invigorating day out abroad, especially because you also ride through Germany and Wallonia.

Old half-timbered houses and square farms
The many half-timbered houses, chapels and square farms on your route certainly contribute to the charm of South Limburg. You will also pass the Vaalsbroekermolen, a beautiful water mill from 1776 where corn was ground. The mill belongs to the Vaelsbroek castle, a U-shaped white classicist mansion from 1761, located a little further on.

The tranquility of the Vijlenerbos
In the rolling landscape, time sometimes seems to have stood still. You drive along green meadows that stretch out comfortably and along streams that leisurely gurgle through the valleys. In the Vijlenerbossen you also experience the sedate pace of nature between the coniferous and deciduous trees. The route ends at a quiet oasis in the middle of this forest: Boscafé't Hijgend Hert. Enjoy the peace and quiet in this car-free zone with a drink or a bite to eat.

The only four-country point ever
From Gemmenich you drive into the Preuswald. The penetrating silence and the impressive canopy make an overwhelming impression here. If you feel like it, you can drive on to the three-country point in Vaals. And if you pay close attention, you will see the Viergrenzenweg there. Four? Yes, four. In the Preuswald there was a mini-state between 1816 and 1920: Neutral-Moresnet. In this former border area there was a zinc mine that was claimed by the Netherlands and Germany. After the independence of Belgium, the mini-state suddenly bordered three countries. And the only four-country point that has ever existed was created. At the three-country point, the paving that once belonged to Neutral-Moresnet can still be seen in the pie slice.
