Description

Hoge Kempen National Park: Hiking Mecca Thorpark
As a hiking enthusiast with a love for height differences, the Hoge Kempen National Park is the hiking mecca of the Dutch-speaking area. There are few other nature reserves in our region where the atmosphere of the mountains is so present. From everywhere you have a view of the hilltops, water features and vast forests. The Thorpark Entrance Gate offers all the facilities a hiker desires: Several very spacious car parks, a hiking information board, toilets and catering facilities to refresh the thirsty after a tough hike.

6 routes depart from the car park, all clearly indicated by a colored symbol. The blue and green walking loops are between 2 and 10 km. The red (12km) and yellow (16.5km) are slightly longer. Avid walkers can even make a top walk of 20 km (only available on gpx via nationalepark.be). The yellow walk takes you along various highlights in the Thorpark and surroundings. It is a journey of 16.5 km in the middle of nature and beautiful views. The walking loop starts with a few wooden paths through the Stiemerbeek valley and near the ponds. After the first ascent you will reach the"terril pond\\\"; a pond at a height with a view of the former mine buildings in the distance. Between the two terrils of Waterschei and As you walk up and down between the greenery, with a view of the slag heap of Zwartberg. And finally you walk through the typical Limburg bronze-green oak and its heaths. Here you will also find an extensive collection of juniper shrubs. The mine shaft of Waterschei is the end point of the walk, and Thor Terrazza is the place to go for a well-deserved snack and a drink.
This route is the yellow route - part of 440 km of hiking trails in the Hoge Kempen National Park. All trails are well signposted or you can use a map or GPX.
