Description

The route starts at Poort naar de Biesbosch in Lage Zwaluwe. During the Eighty Years' War, there was a lot of fighting here, because the fortified city of Breda was important for the protection of Holland. Above Breda, you will pass through a polder that was part of the Breda defense lines. It could be flooded to make life difficult for the enemy. The Spinolaschans was built in 1637 by Frederik Hendrik. He expanded a fortification that had been built earlier by Spinola in 1625. After a short cut through the beautiful old Breda, you will discover even more remains of the Eighty Years' War. In Terheijden, you will find De Kleine Schans, built by the Spanish in 1590. In 1637, the Dutch troops gave the fortress its current form.
