Nice walk on Texel

The landscapes on Texel are close together: you walk through dunes, meadows and along the sea that surrounds the largest Wadden island. The wind is always present here, so you can get a breath of fresh air while walking.

In the Texel meadow landscape you can still see the characteristic garden walls and white-green farmhouses. The garden walls were built in the course of the seventeenth century by stacking sod on top of each other, so that the plots of sheep pastures were separated from each other. Until that period, the herd of different owners simply mixed together.

Typically Texel

During your walk you will also see some typical sheep barns, or sheep sheds. They are thatched wooden sheds, the sloping side of which faces the prevailing west wind. Contrary to what the name suggests, they were used to store tools and feed.

Memories of the Ice Age

The walk also leads along the foot of the Hoge Berg, the boulder clay hill that, at fifteen metres, forms the highest point on the island. If you feel like it, you can walk up the hill and enjoy an expansive view. A wonderful moment for a picnic, of course. Of course, the route also takes you through the charming village of Den Hoorn, of which the striking fifteenth-century church is the figurehead. Just before the village of Oudeschild you pass the former redoubt built in 1572 to defend the Marsdiep and the Rede van Texel.

The starting point for this route is Zorgboerderij Novalishoeve. On the cozy terrace you can drink a nice cup of coffee or tea, if you feel like it, with a piece of homemade cake. If you're hungry, the Novalishoeve is an excellent place to have a nice lunch. In the store you can buy various organic products.
