In the Texel meadow landscape you can still see the characteristic garden walls and white-green farmhouses. The garden walls were constructed in the course of the seventeenth century by stacking turf on top of each other, so that the parcels of sheep pastures were separated from each other. Until that period, the herds of different owners simply walked through each other.
During your walk you will also see some typical sheep sheds, or sheep barns. They are thatched wooden sheds with a sloping side facing the prevailing westerly wind. Contrary to what the name suggests, they were used for storing tools and feed.
The walk also leads along the foot of the Hoge Berg, the boulder clay hill that, at fifteen metres, is the highest point on the island. If you feel like it, you can walk up the hill and enjoy a wide view. A wonderful moment for a picnic, of course. Of course, the route also takes you through the charming village of Den Hoorn, whose striking fifteenth-century church is the figurehead. Just before the village of Oudeschild, you pass the former redoubt that was built in 1572 to defend the Marsdiep and the Rede van Texel.
