Description
If you cycle this route you get the idea that you are abroad for a day. Vineyards, castles and un-Dutch views provide a real holiday feeling.
Your route starts at Kasteel Elsloo. The actual castle has been swallowed up by the Maas, but what remains of outbuildings is not bad either. Below Bunde you pass Buitenplaats Vaeshartelt, a nice place for coffee.
Then you drive into Maastricht, via the nice neighborhood of Wyck on the right bank of the Maas. You cycle into the center over the Sint Servaas Bridge, the oldest bridge in the Netherlands. Latin Quarter of Maastricht: the Jekerkwartier.
Have a drink on the Onze Lieve Vrouweplein - it feels like you're in France! You cycle up the right flank of Sint Pietersberg. You can take a breather at Buitengoed Slavante. At the very top is the ENCI Quarry, now a rugged nature reserve where even the eagle owl breeds.
Grab a terrace near Fort Sint Pieter before you cycle back down! At the bottom of the left flank of Sint Pietersberg you will find the Jekerdal with its vineyards. Château Neercanne is a terraced castle as you would expect in the Loire, built entirely of marlstone. Back in the city you will discover the Helpoort, a medieval city gate complete with towers.
