Description
This route takes you across the border from Zeeland to North Brabant. You cycle across the island of Tholen in Zeeland and over the Brabantse Wal, an abrupt transition from the higher sandy soils to the lower-lying marine clay polders that create a striking elevation in the landscape.
About the Brabant Wal
The starting point of this cycle route is just outside Oud-Vossemeer. From here you set course for Halsteren and Bergen op Zoom. You cycle over the Brabantse Wal. This steep edge was probably caused by erosion by the river Scheldt and by the sea. In some places the shore is about 20 meters above NAP. In Bergen op Zoom you can see the difference between high and low very well in the streets of the city center. The western part of the city center lies on the marine clay soils at the foot of the Brabantse Wal. From Bergen op Zoom you cycle on the Markiezaatskade, a four-kilometre-long auxiliary dam that is part of the Delta Works.
Regional store De Stelhoek
At the end of the route you will end up in Oud-Vossemeer again. Just outside this village you can go to the regional shop De Stelhoek. Browse around here and choose the tastiest regional products from all the goodies that are displayed here.
Mill Sancto Antonio
You will find windmill Sancto Antonio on the edge of Halsteren. This corn mill was built in 1817 by order of a few bakers from Bergen op Zoom. The mill has been owned by several families. In 1826 the mill burned down, but it was then restored. After the war, the mill was restored again. The rods of the mill were then replaced. Today the mill is still kept running by a miller.
