Tour of Brielle and Hellevoetssluis from Rockanje

Your cycling route starts with a real farm ice cream from De IJsboerin. Brielle has a beautiful fortress belt from the seventeenth century and is one of the best preserved defense works in the Netherlands. The fortress belt has been restored and you can admire no fewer than nine bastions and five ravelins. Brielle, or Den Briel, was captured by the Beggars from the Spaniards on April 1, 1572. The city still celebrates a historic liberation day on April 1 every year. Thanks to the port, Hellevoetsluis was a prosperous town until the nineteenth century. However, around 1830 a canal was constructed to open up the port of Rotterdam, after which economic activity in Hellevoetsluis declined. Now you can enjoy the atmosphere in the old town and its historic harbor.
