Description
You immediately notice it when you cycle in the Achterhoek: a country road is rarely straight here. It meanders along tall trees, hedgerows, streams and around fields. Your view changes every few meters. From Saxon farm to forests. And suddenly you have a vast landscape in front of you, especially if you cycle near the IJssel and the De Berkel river. This route takes you from Harfsen through nature and the villages of Eefde and Almen. In the Achterhoek you will still find the peace and quiet from grandmother's time. An ideal environment to switch back for a while.
Just before Almen you see the Warkense Molen, a flour mill from 1878. In Almen itself, the village center still exudes the atmosphere of long ago. If you turn right instead of left into Dorpsstraat from Whemerweg, you will see the Reformed church from the fourteenth century. At numbers 59 and 64 there are two other national monuments from the nineteenth century.
During this route you will pass a number of beautiful old buildings. You see Saxon farms, sometimes still thatched, which belong to the type of hall house farms. The front part is usually the living area, behind it is the part with the stables and, at the top, the hay storage. They give your route an extra historical touch.
