Description

As a reformed boy, Jan Wolkers was destined for the heavenly paradise. As an adult, when he had long fallen from his father's faith, he discovered that paradise on earth already existed: Texel.

You can reach the beach at Paal 12 by turning left at junction 5. At junction 41 you turn right for a short distance to visit the Georgian cemetery.

Thijsse Monument Den Burg
'In my early youth,\\\' Wolkers wrote,'there were only two writers. God, who wrote the Bible, and Jac. P. Thijsse, who had written the Verkade albums.\\\' The flower of glass and steel in the pond of Den Burg:'Carefree\\\' is Wolker's\\\' tribute to the possessed biologist. On April 28, 2003, the 750-pound statue was moved into place by a Cougar helicopter.

Plaque in the dike at Ceres
In 1998, on the occasion of the completed dike reinforcement on the east coast of Texel, Wolkers designed a glass monument that was supposed to represent the battle against the water: 'This far and no further', a large wave of glass resting against a buttress hit. The unyielding name was to no avail. Now all that remains in the dike is a plaque that is reminiscent of the proud glass monument.

Ferry port
When the island on the ferry loomed on the horizon, it reminded him of a seventeenth-century painting. On September 11, 1972 he noted in his diary:'From the Mok Bay above the dunes, the red roofs and the white tower of Den Hoorn. Do as the people of Texel do, take some time for a cup of coffee or ice cream. There is always something to do around the ferry landing and mooring.

Church Den Hoorn
'Then we go to Den Hoorn,\\\' Wolkers wrote in his diary on January 2, 1970, when he had spent New Year's Eve on Texel with Karina and his son Jeroen.'Stop at the church and walk through the cemetery. Drijver is buried there. Later, when Wolkers came to live on Rozendijk, he looked at the church tower in the distance from his living room every day.

Pole 12
This is the beach where Wolkers liked to go with his wife in the last years of his life. He sat down on the terrace, and Karina dived into the water - even if it was freezing. Paal 12 appears in Wolker's last novel Zomerhitte, which served as a Book Week gift in 2005.

Rozendijk
At the end of the 1970s, Wolkers wanted to leave Amsterdam, the city where he had lived for thirty years. In November 1980 he bought the former mayor's house on the Rozendijk (we do not mention the exact address here for privacy reasons).

Ecomare
During his stay on Rottumerplaat, where Wolkers spent a week alone, he saved the life of a young seal. The'cryer\\\' was then transferred to the Texel Museum, later Ecomare, to recover. On September 12, 1971, Wolkers went to see how the seal, which was named 'Karina', was baptized.
