Veere is one of the most picturesque fortified towns in the Netherlands. In the old town you can see many well-preserved monuments. This walk takes you back in time. The Grote Kerk, for example, dates from 1348. The town hall with its beautiful facade dates from the fifteenth century and houses the Stadhuismuseum De Vierschaar. The carillon in the tower has been voted one of the most beautiful in the Netherlands. All those historic buildings soon tempt you to slow down: while strolling, you can enjoy the special Veerse atmosphere for longer. The cozy terraces beckon for a drink and a snack, you would almost forget that you are taking a walk. On the quay of the city you look out over the Veerse Meer. There are some benches to enjoy the view of the pleasure yachts, the water and the strolling passers-by. Here you will also find Museum De Scottish Huizen, which is housed in two sixteenth-century monuments. The Campveerse Toren from 1500 was once part of the city defences. After all, Veere was once a powerful port city, at the end of the seventeenth century there were no fewer than 750 houses within the city walls. Nowadays there are less than 300. The area around Veere is also very worthwhile. You walk here through the quiet polders and along the Walcheren Canal. The route also takes you through the Veerse Kreek and the Vest van Veere. The creek with its many foothills was created at the end of the Second World War when Walcheren was inundated. Nowadays it is a quiet and beautiful nature reserve where it is wonderful to walk.
