Description

Around Zaandam you can enjoy a typical Dutch polder landscape that is bursting with beautiful windmills. This route takes you across the Zaanse Schans, an area known for the many monumental windmills and other historic buildings that you can admire here.

Special windmills in the polder
At the start of the route you immediately set course for the Zaanse Schans. Here you can feast your eyes with all the beautiful windmills that can be found side by side. You probably hardly know where to look anymore. For example, take a look at De Huisman, paint mill De Kat, the Klaverblad and the Bonte Hen. You then walk further in the direction of the town of Wormer and then continue in the direction of Zaandam through the polders. Here you will find the old sailing polder of the Wormer and Jisperveld. This open meadow area is popular with many species of meadow birds such as the black-tailed godwit, redshank, lapwing and ruff. A large part of this typical Dutch cultural landscape is owned by Natuurmonumenten.

Extensive polders
You can also walk on the ring dike of the De Engewormer polder. This polder consists mainly of meadows. Around this polder you will find the Kalverpolder, the Polder Wormer, the villages of Jisp and Nick and the Wijdewormer.

The historic Zaanse Schans
The Zaanse Schans is a special area that is intended to preserve historical heritage. So it is actually a kind of open-air museum that is freely accessible. In addition to centuries-old windmills, you will also find a cheese dairy, a bakery museum, a beating workshop and other small businesses and museums where you can get acquainted with old crafts. In short, you can completely immerse yourself in times long gone.
