Along the border of France near Poperinge

This route takes you through the Westhoek, the West Flemish border region in Belgium and France. In this region time apparently passes a little less quickly, here peace, nature and tradition, such as brewing beer, reign. This region also harbors many memories of the Great War, or the First World War. The division of the Westhoek is popularly called 'de schreve' (the dash) to indicate that the state border here has been drawn arbitrarily. With this route you explore Poperinge and the surrounding area south of this town. In this region, the wooded and rolling hills of the West Flemish Hills alternate with drained polders, arable fields and historic towns and buildings. Poperinge is known as the hop city. A lot of hops are grown in the area, which gives the area a unique appearance. In the center you cycle past the National Hop Museum De Stads Scale. You also drive past Talbot House. This house was used by the British army during the First World War as a clubhouse for all soldiers, without distinction of rank or status. Around Westouter you drive through a region that, because of hills such as the Rodeberg and Zwarteberg, is regularly included in the Ghent-Wevelgem cycling race and the Four Days of Dunkirk. This region suffered greatly during the First World War. During your tour through the villages of Westouter, Loker, De Klijte and Reningelst you will see several military cemeteries from the Great War.
