Description

The Beemster route is a varied cycling tour through one of the most beautiful reclaimed lands in North Holland. From your bike you have a beautiful view of this extensive polder, with its grasslands, fields, bulb fields, windmills and five forts that are part of the Defense Line of Amsterdam. There are dozens of beautiful bell-shaped farms along the cycle route, often flanked by old fruit trees. On the edge of this old peat polder you will pass picturesque villages such as Grootschermer and De Rijp. West of De Beemster, the route passes through the Eilandspolder, a wetland peat meadow area teeming with birds in the summer. The moist grasslands are home to countless meadow birds, such as godwits and redshanks; the water and reed banks are populated by, among other things, wigeons and plovers.
