Haarlemmermeer, North Holland, The Netherlands
Cycling route: 149081
Provided by: Groots Genieten
In this region, many flowers are grown annually behind the dunes on so-called geest grounds, soil that consists of a mixture of dune sand, clay and/or peat. The colourful spring and summer seasons are heralded by the flowering of crocuses at the end of March. But you also cycle along canals and ditches, green lanes and chic old country houses! For example, the Rhijngeest estate dates from 1720, but has been extensively renovated in colonial style. The history of Kasteel Endegeest goes back to the beginning of the fourteenth century. Between Wassenaar and Noordwijkerhout you cycle through Hollands Duin, a narrow but varied strip of dunes that was created by a combination of nature and man.
