Along the waterline - Exciting history

Let us take you on a journey of discovery along the fortifications of one of the most beautifully preserved defence lines in the Netherlands: the New Dutch Waterline. The starting and ending point of this cycle tour is Culemborg, a city where history speaks from every cobblestone. You cycle along the dike along the Lek to the west, with a view of the floodplains, past Werk aan het Spoel. Variation tip: cross the river here with the Liniepont, which sails between Werk aan de Groeneweg, Werk aan het Spoel and Fort Everdingen. The route leads you further through quiet nature towards the so-called tower fort: Fort Asperen. The last kilometres back to Culemborg take you straight through the 'fruit garden of the Netherlands', past many orchards that are a feast for the eyes in blossom time and a feast for the tongue in harvest time. Not to be missed is the Heerlijkheid Marienwaerdt estate, with the famous Appeldijk and delicious coffee and cake at De Stapelbakker. Variation tip: Take a detour from the route for GeoFort, the exciting monumental fortress island, where everything revolves around maps and navigation.
