Montferland is full of stories, about witches,"white women\\\", ghostly apparitions and smugglers. In this hilly landscape, where patches of fog resemble ghostly apparitions, many stories are still being told. In this way, the culture, history and mysterious character of Montferland is preserved. The cycling routes Montferland 1 to 5 each have their own story. Route 1 = De Freule van de Nevelhorst = The beautiful Fredegunda lived around 11.00 am on the Nevelhorst and married Diederich, lord of the Mandershorst. When Fredegunda's father died during a crusade, Diederich also decided to go on a crusade to work for his father-in-law .On his departure his wife swore eternal loyalty to him. But after a few years she thought it was enough and wanted to get married again. To get a good match, she organized a tournament where she would give her hand to the victor. The battle was almost over when suddenly a knight on a roaring black horse came rushing up. He was dressed in golden armor with the red cross of the Crusaders and defeated all his opponents. Fredegunda was supposed to marry him, but the knight would not reveal himself before midnight And when Didam's tower bell had struck its 12 strokes, the bridegroom rose and lifted his helmet\\\"Here is Diederich\\\" he said ,\\\"and he demands his right\\\". He took Fredegunda in his arms and danced with her as his skulls rattled in his golden armor. Suddenly the floor tore and both sank into the cove of the earth. No one ever set foot in the castle again, it was ruined. Nowadays only the name De Nevelhorst remains. In 2013, remains of the castle were found during excavations.
