Culemborg, between Lek and Linge

In the Betuwe you will find everything to make your cyclist's heart beat faster: peace, space and historic towns and forts. Get on the saddle and enjoy this cycling gem.

Mariënwaerdt
The route starts at a beautiful point: in glorious Mariënwaerdt. This private estate of over 900 hectares contains no fewer than 40 national monuments, such as 14 homesteads, haystacks and flood barns. Further on you will pass Eetcafé Uw Chef Tricht. You can eat something tasty here before you cycle further into the polder. Here you drive through a mosaic of grassy meadows and fruit orchards. On the car-free roads you will have no trouble switching back.

Forts
After you have driven a bit along the Lek with its pristine floodplains, you will pass the ruins of Culemborg Castle. The fortress was built in the fourteenth century and largely demolished in 1812. You pass Werk aan het Spoel, and you can still see the constructed fortifications in the landscape. Further on you pass Fort Everdingen from 1847. KunstFort Asperen is an imposing monument, definitely worth a stop. Finally, you drive through the picturesque Beesd.
