Description

The Noordoostpolder was constructed in an area that for a long time consisted of the sea. Before the Zuiderzee was created, there was already a small piece of land here where people lived. The former island of Schokland was a last remnant of this ancient country. Nowadays, the island and the land around it have been reclaimed, thus preventing it from disappearing permanently. Schokland is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It symbolizes Dutch life with water. In the Schokland Museum you can learn more about the history of this village.

Architecture in Nagele
Nagele was built by the De Acht architectural group, which included architects such as Gerrit Rietveld and Aldo van Eyck. Nagele is special to see because straight lines and surfaces are consistently used. The village is one of the few places where modern architects were able to implement their ideas on a large scale. The buildings in Nagele are strict and straight with lots of glass, concrete and flat roofs. Museum Nagele focuses on the special architecture and you will learn more about the history of Nagele. The exhibitions in this museum change regularly, so there is always something new to see.

Historical Urk
The route starts and ends in ancient Urk, a lively and characteristic fishing village. You can still experience that island feeling here with a walk through the maze of alleys in the old picturesque village center. There are surprising vistas, cozy squares, characteristic facade signs and many graceful decorations with anchors and ships. Before or after your route, feel free to cycle to Tourist Info Urk for more information about this region. The information point is located in Museum Het Oude Raadhuis.
