Tour of the Overloon Dunes

Until the beginning of the twentieth century, the nature around Overloon was wild and untouched. The Overloonse Duinen is an area with shifting dunes, many juniper shrubs and a piece of heathland. Trees were planted on the sandy soil for wood production and over time the rugged nature was reclaimed. There are field boulders at 75 locations of the Liberation Route that serve as listening points. L117: The Battle of Overloon is about one of the fiercest battles in the Netherlands during World War II.

Water mill Geysteren from 1897 replaced a predecessor that stood on the same spot. The mill fell into disrepair due to an electric mill. In 1961 the mill was converted into a residence. Castle Well has dominated the area for centuries. In the Second World War, both the main castle and the outer castle were heavily damaged. Both buildings were restored and are now listed as a national monument, as are the bridges, the tithe barn and the historic garden belonging to the fortress.
